The Eternal Inquiry

A consideration of interdependency, reciprocity, and Death as a generative force.

It started as an Art Installation at Burning Man 2023

We built a circle in deep playa in which we gathered around an alchemical fire to explore our relationships with the structures that push against our space. We opened dialogues that consider the endings that drive our beginnings, and what must burn.

This dialogue must exist so that we can design into the future with wisdom rather than recklessness. 

The path to freedom asks us to soften and receive the heat.

Play and make things that matter

We are conservationists working hard to build a world in which humans and nature dance wildly together in creative collaboration. Sharon is a creative concepts designer, dragon rider, and the founder of The Human InnerFace . Patrick and Rory are the crafty carvers of ReForest Furniture, ”Let’s make some art ya goof!”

The Story

Patrick and Rory head out into the Unita Mountains and harvest the dead.

They listen to the whispers of the their former existence as they carve into them until a sculpture is revealed…and then they burn them using an 18th century Japanese technique called shou sugi ban. Through the flames they have come back to life as Fire Spirts who will hold the perimeter of the circle as Guardians of Transformation.

The Build and The Burn

There is a magical moment of arrival; when the truck pulls up, the flags are set, and the art finds its place and begins to speak. The crew becomes family as we laugh and sweat together and then marvel when the lights come on. The sculptures spoke differently according to the sun, the wind, and the rain.

Their story continues to unfold as they have found their way onto Red Dot Ranch, a regenerative property overlooking the ocean in Pescadero, CA. Four sculptures were installed in alignment with the Four Directions to support a land tour during the AIA Indigenous Architecture Conference. Since then, they have remained as totem Storytellers that have held multiple HumaniTree experiences in collaboration with the vision of Red Dot Studios & Red Dot Ranch.
